Our Environment Applications

Wastewater Management

AKSA's entire production area is surrounded by wastewater conduction lines. Industrial waste water derived from production processes and domestic waste water emanating from unit areas, offices, dining halls and other social facilities are channeled to AKSA's Wastewater Treatment Plant. Pollution workloads created by wastewater from production processes are kept under continuous control through the automation-backed operation, high level of education and awareness of workers and proactive surveillance.

Wastewater containing oil is pre-treated before entering our wastewater treatment plant by oil containers. AKSA's wastewater treatment plant was established in 1983. It was modernized in 1991 in a project in which AKSA cooperated with TUBİTAK, the Turkish Scientific Technology Research Organization.

The last modernization in 2000 of the wastewater treatment plant provides complete automatic purification of all domestic and industrial wastewater according to regulations. The environment is protected while our waste water is made harmless. More energy is saved by using more efficient electric power in our plant which is operated with advanced technology. This type of operation averts the kind of odors, foam and noise experienced in other biological treatment processes.

Our plant is subject to the tables of 10.1 and 10.7 of the Wastewater Control Regulation. Our facility has a daily capacity of 6,500 cubic meters (m3) and can treat the wastewater of a town of 60,000 inhabitants. Nitrogen which affects the natural life in the oceans is turned into nitrogen gas in the air that we breathe after it's consumed by bacteria. The units in which biological purification takes place (using bacteria) are completely controlled automatically, can store in all the wastewater emanating from our activities for four days (This is equal to the daily wastewater of a city with a population of a quarter of a million).

Equipment in our facility is also backed up by spare parts in case of malfunction. Our electric energy is produced by Akenerji Otoprodüktör, a sister company. Therefore the possibility of loosing our energy source does not exist. Also, the chances of our facility breaking down do not exist. Emergency precautionary measures have been determined and instructions have been given. Also, the levels of consciousness and education of staff are always upgraded.

Purification is carried out in three steps at the facility:

1- Physical processes: Sifting, balancing, mixing, sedimentation, intensification, condensing and filtering

2-Chemical processes: Chemical oxidation (elevating), neutralization, disinfection, coagulation and maceration, mud conditioning, turning unwanted compounds which exist in the wastewater into harmless compounds by using treatment chemicals, or turning into a structure which will be treated in the subsequent processes.

3-Biological processes: Bio-macerating (softening in biological processes) and mineralization (disintegration) processes is carried out for the purpose of destroying organic pollutants in nature.

Management of Air Quality

Before all kinds of work in technological improvement and development were done, the processes of considering the environmental impacts which can affect air quality are determined in our company. These effects in the technological improvement, planning of projects, implementing of projects, keeping under control of works and developing of projects are taken into consideration. In this way, the level of affecting the public health and the ecological system in terms of air quality, led by all the projects and activities of improvement-development, is determined by systematic method. Additionally, we determine that these projects and works are appropriate to the legal regulations and/or our voluntary commitments.

The examples of operations which have been carried out for the purpose of preventing and keeping pollution under control in AKSA are given below:

Preventive Measures

- 6 sigma projects
- Zero emission with floating acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate tanks
- Washing towers that hold solvents and permit reuse
- Filters that hold dust

Control Activities

- The Emission permit given by the Ministry of Health
- Annual emission measurements and reports carried by an external organization which was assigned through the adequacy certification given by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
- Periodical measurements of environmental air carried out in every three months by external organizations that received their Compliance Certificates from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry
- Measurements carried out twice a month using measuring boxes located at 14 points.
- Momentary measurements by portable measuring devices

Noise Management

Before all kinds of work in technological improvement and development are completed, the processes of considering the environmental impacts which affect noise pollution are determined in our company. These effects in the technological improvement, planning of projects, implementing of projects, keeping under control of projects and developing of projects are taken into consideration. In this way, the level of influencing the public health and the ecological system in terms of air quality, led by all the projects and activities of improvement-development, is determined by systematic method. Additionally, we determine that these projects and works are appropriate to the legal regulations and/or our voluntary commitments.

Activities carried out in AKSA plant have been considered, the sources and levels of noise and vibration have been determined in details. The aforementioned sourcing points, waste maps and Drawings of Noise Measuring Points in the Factory Area have been documented.

Operations of control and system developments carried out at the sources of noise and vibration can be summarized as follows:
-Monthly measurements and continuous monitoring,
- Planning of operations with in the context of annual environmental and/or safety and health at work,
- Continuous and conscious maintenance operations,
- Technological developments/improvements,
- Controlling of the system, support of isolation,
- Providing the widespread use of protective equipment,
- Activities of informing

Our Policy of Waste Management

The waste for AKSA Company means that; materials which can possibly emanate directly or indirectly from operations and can also possibly create positive or negative effects in air, water and ground. The waste for AKSA Company also means that; materials which can be reused or regained and have to be eliminated by related legal requirements.

The Phases of Waste Management of AKSA Company:
- Determining of sourcing points and preparing maps of waste,
- Follow-up of amount (all the waste which can be retainable and reusable) and changes,
- Decreasing the amounts built up and preventing of pollution,
- Alternatives of regaining, reusing or eliminating,
- Preparations of the decreasing of cost and the increasing of income,
- Planning of the processes of the separating at source, collecting, inter- storage and transferring,
- Arranging of the containers of appropriate waste, the vehicles/equipment of collecting and the areas of inter-storage,
- Documenting of the arrangements carried out and the systems installed,
- Reporting and entering in a register of the data related to the systems installed,
- Are carried out as the improvement of systems.
