At December 2001, a conference was held at London related with a Diplomatic Conference on Maritime Safety. The conference emphasized the importance of maritime safety. At the end of this unique conference an International Maritime Safety Agreement was signed and executed and at 1974 several new provisions and an ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Security Code) was accepted to enhance the safety in seas.
The objective of this code was to determine the actions that may are considered as a threat for the safety of maritime transportation and form an international structure to allow cooperation of sea vessels and port facilities.
The ISPS Code is a code where ISPS officials are compulsorily assigned to sea vessels and ship owner companies as ISPS officials are involved to take necessary precautions to avoid any terrorist attacks on ships and port facilities and make preparations of safety plans and carry out safety assessments . Ports and ships that comply with the mentioned standards are awarded with a ISPS Code Compatibility Certificate. The responsible authority for such application is the Maritime Subsecretary of the Turkish Prime Ministry .
To obtain an ISPS Certificate, AKSA applied at 2004 to the related organization. However, at that date RSO (Recognized Security Organization) bodies were not determined. At March training studies began and at the end of this successful period, at 07.07.2004 AKSA Port Facility was awarded with an ISPC Certificate.
